  • With 43 MPH winds, we're mixing it up today.
  • Meet in the commons after school for conditioning and strength.  No throwing, some running and strength and core.
  • You'll need running shoes.

  • We'll keep it short.

  • Tomorrow, back on track in what promises to be a warm sunny day with little to no wind.
Looks like our first tournament will be in Bend, April 5th.   Set your calendar.  I'll know for sure today or tomorrow.

Practice Starts Monday, March 3rd.

Practice, Monday March 3rd, at Skyliner Fields (near the middle school).
Students are responsible for their own transportation -- there is no bus, we are an unfunded club, and we simply are unable to get field space at summit.

Traditionally the team meets at the tennis courts to carpool.
We have a lot of freshmen, on the team, who don't drive, so parents, if find out from your kids who their ride is if you're worried about it, or work out something with another parent.

Bring a WHITE SHIRT, a DARK SHIRT, and WATER.
Bring clothes that will keep you warm enough for conditions.
CLEATS are really useful -- it's sort of not fun without them.
If the fields are open, and conditions are safe, we practice.
Unsafe is lightning; and a certain secret combination of rain, cold and wind, and kids without enough clothes.  So bring clothes.  Long sleeve polyester shirt, sweatpants, a tobbaggin hat, maybe some thin gloves...

If you're sick, stay home.  If you have too much studying to do, study.

Practice is done by 5:00 sharp everyday.

Great season.

Congrats on a great season.  The Summit Storm Boys finish 7th out of 13, and top 25 in the country.  The Girls picked up a couple wins this season, and have really built in terms of numbers, consistency and enthusiasm.

Set lofty goals for yourself, and then work to meet them.  The plan is to start as soon as school is out, meeting monday, wednesday, and friday at 8:30 a.m..  We'll throw a lot add in some drills, then play ulty, goalty, or mini.

Throw, throw, throw, and watch lots of video. Tufts vs. Dartmouth here.  It's funny, an old Seattle team mate of mine is the coach at Dartmouth and he has them use Seattle's old call to go from zone to man.  "Baker".  As in Mt. Baker.  I don't think there are any strato-volcanoes near Dartmouth.

one girls team: numbers look good, probably in the 13-17 range.

boys, tough call: one 20 man Varsity team, and as many kids who want to be on the roster and hang out...
or
a 20 man varsity and 15 man JV.  Be a tough row to Hoe for JV, but, valuable experience.  Lots more paperwork for me to take both... but I'm game.
-----
tie-dye friday get together:
i want to tie-dye the cotton shirts.  you'd wash and dry yours and bring it to me.... I have a cool design... and we have good dye...  need a host, and the buckets from the car wash... and some worker bees to help me fold and dip.  Trust me, they'll look cool.  If no one can host friday afternoon evening, I'll just get some help to fold them at practice, and i'll dye them....
----
Rosters:  Both teams have varsity level players.  BRUTAL to split the team: Thanks to Christina for help.
Big thanks to  Matt, and Ryan S who have graciously agreed to bolster the JV team with skill and experience.  There are also some 1st years on the Varsity team, who I'm putting into positions to express their strengths, and see what happens.

Sunday players: Aidan and/or Seth.
Injured: Chad Rogers, Ronak Patel, Kristin Strom
Pre-arranged absence for this weekend: Tristan, Niko, Cole,

I'll switch up the "Swing Players" at Single Gender.
Goal would be 20 person varsity, and 15 person JV for westerns.

Pratice Pics.

Fun day today, it's getting hotter.  You know what would taste better than anything on a day like today? Ice water.  And I do have a giant gatorade cooler we can bring to practice if someone wants to tote it.

Let see Some pics, shall we?
They should enlarge when you click them.
Extensive professional level cropping went into this.

upcoming week.

Carwash
BBQ
TRYOUTS

CARS:
Good turnout at the Carwash.  A few people neither came, nor communicated, etc.  Rats.  It was a lot of work, and that much time out in the sun left me tired!  If you were tired Sunday, think what a 2 day tournament will be like: Hydrate, Sunscreen, eat.  We did well:  MANY people who had their car washed commented on how excellent you were:  I was especially impressed with how good y'all were about recognizing missed spots as cars dried and DEALING with it.  People notice.  The "Ultimate" Car-wash indeed.  Maybe next year, instead of a carwash, we'll offer expensive cleaning and detailing.  Lower volume, higher quality. Just a thought.

BBQ:
I'd like to have a post practice BBQ soon.  We can truck a Grill to the fields, have it at a parents house in the neighborhood behind the fields (got a couple parents), or just burn some coal in the grills at the fields, (near the pavillions), and eat after.

TRYOUTS:
Practice this week, coed tryouts.  I'll take attendance all week:  We'll have separate scrimmages tuesday and thursday for people who are planning on attending states in 2 weeks.  The monday, wed, practices are most-optional, but since I have to choose A-Team b-team, attendance will be a factor (along with seniority/experience, skill, roles, previous tournaments, season long attendance, etc).

If everyone on the 'league teams' was going to tournaments, it'd be 3 coed teams, and 2 boys/1 girl teams for state.  It's probably not as simple.

Tryout drills will be a 2 v 2 mark break drill, huck drill / come under drill with decision making/completions important, 500 drill, and a couple others.  Scrimmages will be balanced, and athletes  who aren't going to tournaments should come:  They will play either goaltimate, or something else, after participating in drills.  Monday, Wed, Friday, we'll also do some of these drills.

We're trying to fill these roles:

Roles you can fill:
DEFENDER: Job Description.  Shut down your person.  HOLD THE MARK. Don't get beat to the force side.  Basic catch and throw and dump it to handlers, with no turnovers.  (Everyone should be trying out for this role). Examples: Aidan, Nico. But everyone needs this to be their starting point.

PRIMARY HANDLER (0, 1):  Get open at will, over and over.  Break mark at will.  Able to consistently hit long throws in Drills.  Primary zone handler.  Excellent decision making skills.  (POSITION FILLED) (jk, but, the window is closing:  be honest about your ability to huck a flick, consistently break mark, and ability to NEVER turn it over in zone). BEST Ex: Braedon.  Jaydra.

SECONDARY HANDLER (1,a):  SAME as primary handlers, but you don't need the monster flick.  Break mark, decision making, and very 'risk averse' (this means don't turn it over.  Handle in zone. BEST EX: Chris Williams.

CUTTERS: DEEP(3,4,b,c):  Willingness to run deep, and out run your defender all over field. Hit short open forehands.  Break mark with backhand and dump.  In zone, play Deep or Wing. First thought is ALWAYS to go towards opponents endzone.  Best EX: Emma (in co-ed).  Max for Boys.

Cutters: MID(2,3,b):  Same as DEEP cutters (get open deep), but also the responsibility to POP in a zone. Ability to hit longer forehand an advantage. Decision making, and knowing your throws are key.  BEST EX: Dahlio

If we have money after fees: I found a cool weather-proof boom box that we could get.

never give up

ultimate on espn.  watch this.  and never give up.  pursue the frisbee like a hyperactive border collie.  and NEVER give up.  our game is not a spectator sport.   make yourself a highlight with every play.

this was #5 on espn's play of the day.

Tip of the day.

Today's tip: Being a positive team mate.
When you are on the field with a team mate, at a practice, or at a tournament, practice the life long lessons: be encouraging. If a team mate screws up: little secret: they probably know it. Encourage your team mate. I don't know if you saw the 'white team's' high five and positive reinforcement line in goaltimate today, but it helps. Support your team mates at all time. It will make them play better. Then we will win more.

A team sport carries the huge burden of letting others down when you screw up. If we make a mistake, we have to live with our own mistake, but also the heavier burden of letting our team mates down. You will be a better player and better team mate if you give a little energy to picking your team mates up. It is a good habit, and it will win us a game one day.

Along the same line: Don't bash on other teams. Yes, if they make a bad call, calmly ask them to explain their call. If you talk to them calmly, rationally, you have a chance of getting them to take it back. If you yell, forget about it. If you talk a ton of smack, you'll probably just get them angry. Sometimes this works. Probably not. We don't do this.

I'll allow you a little leeway here. We need more competitive scrimmages. Exhort (urge, advise) your scrimmage team mates to pick it up at practice. Always play games to get better, and then win. By all means, pick an opponent (abillity-buddy) and bet them this: +1 for a goal, +1 for an assist, +1 for a 'd', -1 for a turnover. The loser runs sprints. Or your each run 10 sprints for each -1 at the end of the day. Whatever. Push yourselves to get better. While lifting each other up.

But when in doubt, be nice. And then win the game.
 1 team to coed.

latest

We have 7 as of now.
Devin, Piper, Jaydra, Leah, Erin, Maddie Barrett, Kaitlynn Hickman!

Yay team.  We'll pickup a couple girls from the other teams (each girls team has a 'bye' or 'rest' round).

We have 2 games (girls) and 3 (boys) and we'll be on the road by 3 p.m.  Home before dark, with time to stop for a sandwhich.

y'all rally now

So, one car, and a few kids have bailed / are waffling.
So if you were at ALL thinking of driving, please do.
If your daughter (Especially: We're really short girls) is waffling, de-waffle-her. This is a good chance to show committment to her teammates/friends. I look silly if we don't have a team for a tournament, but it's a shame for the kids when we have to bail. Can't go is legitimate: but if we're at 'won't' or 'have some other things I'd like to do' can you parents give them a gentle nudge to help their team mates?

Girls: If you show up at 7 a.m. tomorrow, there is a guaranteed super secret reward! (That you'll get monday)
Hint: We're off to see the wizard! (No, It is not heart, brain, or flying monkeys).

Boys: I'll see what I can do.

Parents: We still have a tournament scheduled, leaving sunday may 6th from summit at 7 a.m. Returning by approximately 6 p.m. Boys have two games, girls have 3.

Forecast calls for 70 degrees, and sunny with no wind.

If you were waffling, and are now in, call, email or txt to let me know.

610-8253

right now, I know of Devin, Piper, Jaydra, Leah, Kaitlynn, Maddie B. Just need 1 more, but more is better!
